Co-ops Take Business Continuity Planning Course online

In the midst of the COVID-19 Crisis, thirty-two participants from 14 co-ops participated in NATCCO Training Group’s first offering of the Business Continuity Planning Training Course for co-ops on May 4 to 5.

The course is done online through a Webinar.

The BCP workshops are conducted in partnership with Center for Humanitarian Learning & Innovation (CHLI), with the latter as resource.

Course objectives of the Webinar are to enable participants to explain concepts and rationale of business continuity management, the BCP process, and the BCP tools and templates that stakeholders in the co-op themselves will just need to fill up.

Self-learning is the key, as the only people who can create a BCP for a co-op are the stakeholders themselves – especially staff.

“We would like to thank everyone for their interest in joining this webinar, to build a more effective BCP for co-ops. We’ve seen that there were a lot of co-ops who wanted to be part of this,” NATCCO Training Group Head Daisybelle Cabal said.

“This is also a big opportunity for co-ops to maximize work from home during this time of Enhanced Community Quarantine and be more productive,” she added.

Batch 2 Webinar is on May 12.

For those who will join the seminar, you may want to make use of your CETF remitted to NATCCO or you may now remit your CETF to avail the return service for your co-op.

The Center for Humanitarian Learning and Innovation (CHLI) is a joint initiative between the Caucus of Development NGO Networks (CODE-NGO), and the Humanitarian Leadership Academy (HLA). The Center aims to address the growing demand for learning and capacity strengthening on preparedness, response and resilience with the vision to enable people and organisations in the Philippines and Asia to prepare for and respond to crises in their own communities.

CODE-NGO is a federation of legitimate NGO Networks in the Philippines, of which NATCCO Network is a founding member.

In November 2019, the NATCCO Network office staff underwent the BCP facilitated by CHLI.

Pre-seminar is done online on the website

Under the Implementing Rules & Regulations of the CDA Charter, Republic Act 11364, one of the powers or functions the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) shall “require registered cooperative to develop business continuity plans to address all kinds of risks.”

“Business Continuity” is defined as a “proactive approach to ensure continuity or rapid restoration of delivery of the organization’s service or product following a disaster.”

BCP is especially important as co-ops continue to serve members during the COVID-19 Crisis.

Surveys show that only 2 out of 10 businesses in the Philippines have written Business Continuity Plans.

According to NATCCO Chief Sylvia O. Paraguya, “BC is about serving our members in good times and in bad.  We must create safeguards to maintain their trust.”

The NATCCO has also partnered with CHLI to cascade the Business Continuity Course to primary cooperative all over the country.  The online seminar on BCP concepts is free.

“Co-ops manage the assets of their members and have the mission to serve and uplift the lives of their members, even more so after a disaster.  But before enabling co-ops to create their BCPs, we started with ourselves first,” Paraguya said.

In 2018, the CHLI partnered with the Cooperative Development Authority to develop the BCP Course for Cooperatives.
