Climate Action Program

Promotes environmental stewardship as a primary responsibility of co-ops by integrating climate action solutions into the co-op’s core programs and services through the Trainers’ Training on Co-ops for Climate Action, Product Development, Green Co-op Audit and Award, Resiliency-Building, DRRM, and BCP Orientation.

Climate Action Program
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were formally adopted by all United Nations Member States in September 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, following the UN Conference on Sustainable Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 2012.

Number 13 of the seventeen goals, “Climate Action,” calls for urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts.

In November 2019, the International Cooperative Alliance–Asia and Pacific (ICA-AP) convened a workshop in Bangkok, bringing together cooperative leaders from across the region to explore strategies for advancing Climate Action and protecting the environment. The NATCCO Network and the Association of Asian Confederation of Credit Unions (ACCU) participated in this initiative.

By March 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, ACCU hosted an online meeting to present the outcomes of these discussions. By July 2020, the NATCCO Network had developed a tool to help cooperative managers and leaders assess the extent of their Climate Action initiatives. During the same period, ACCU released “Business Solutions 26,” a guide designed to support cooperatives in engaging in Climate Action.

In 2022, the NATCCO Network’s Climate Action Team developed a Climate Action Trainers’ Manual to simplify the establishment and implementation of Climate Action programs within cooperatives. Implementation begins with the use of NATCCO’s assessment tool to evaluate a cooperative’s level of compliance, followed by the integration of Climate Action into organizational policies and operations manuals.

The program emphasizes that Climate Action need not be complex. Rather, it involves adopting sustainable practices in the daily lives of members and embedding these practices into the routine operations of cooperatives. The ultimate goal is to make Climate Action an integral part of the cooperative’s culture and mindset.

To further this effort, NATCCO is establishing a dedicated team to assist cooperatives in integrating and implementing Climate Action initiatives. In 2024, the NATCCO Network also formalized the Green Co-op Award to recognize cooperatives that lead in promoting Climate Action among their members.

The Philippines has been identified as one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, frequently affected by typhoons, droughts, and other natural hazards.

It is therefore imperative for cooperatives to proactively address climate change—not only to safeguard their operations, but also to ensure the long-term well-being of their members.
